Summer in White Mountains, New Hampshire

It has been a fast and furious month of July. First, thank you to the wonderful guests that I got to meet this month. We have had guests from all over the globe in July. Many hikers, cyclists,  and a couple  Appalachian through trail hikers. We had several individual travelers, many families, and a couple groups.

One group was  here for a couple weeks to do a service project with the local Nature Conservancy to help maintain and create new hiking trails. Nice job to these young ladies! We also had participates staying here for  two big events in the area. The two big fundraisers were for the Mount Washington Observatory "Seek the Peak" and the second was for Tin Mountain Conservancy "Century Ride"

Both great organizations and well worthy of everyone's support.  A special plug for Susan Beane the organizer for the Century Ride as she was one of the original managers of this hostel! We also had or first art installation of artist Alex Barringer. I can't stop looking at it! I am still looking for other Native Artists to do pieces if you interested please contact me.

Also this month this  hostel turned 19 years old on July 24th. Happy Anniversary!

Best Place to Stay in White Mountains - WM Hostel

It has been a big week for the hostel. First, a new sign has gone up in the front of the building with the new logo.  This was a very generous gift to me from my Aunt Helene and Uncle George. I can't thank them enough and it makes the sign very special to me.  They are people full of life and very loving spirits and that is what the sign makes me think of when I look at it, thank you!!

We also have now a new big grill for all you grill masters that visit the hostel. This combined with our big back yard will make for some great times this up coming season.  Yes that is six burners and a side stove top burner.  I tried this out last night for the first time and its awesome! 

I got to go and meet fellow business owners at the chamber after hours this week and it was a very pleasant and fun group of people. I am very impressed!  I have signed up for the golf outing this Sunday and look forward to getting to meet some more members.  

In my spare time ;) I am continue to paint and slowly making my way through the first floor.... oh lots of painting to do! Good thing my brother James taught me well~

A Mothers Pride

It is always moving to me to see a traveler talk their parent into staying at a hostel for the first time. Having done this a long time I can usually tell by the nervous hesitancy on the parents part. I can see the thoughts "I can't believe I am going to stay at a hostel"! But I have to say it's most gratifying to see the relief when they come back to the desk after checking in and touring the hostel. They look like they are going to be ok!

But beyond this, how cool is your parent, who is willing to travel with you to a hostel. Very cool in my book!

I was reminded again this past week why I love hostels, and the joy this mode of travel provides for the guests,  and frankly for myself the host as well. A mother and daughter checked in and when the daughter went to pay the mother would not have it. She said "its on me" and then looking at me and beaming with the best expression of pride I think I have ever seen, she said " my daughter here just graduated with her PHD". I forget , sorry, exactly in what but I do remember it involved working towards a cure for cancer. Well if a mothers pride could cure cancer we would all be all set! I was a pleasure to host you both and best wishes for all your work in your field ahead. I certainly feel hopeful their are great people out their working towards this goal.
